' Pop, pop, pop': AA flight with smoking engine triggered concern at takeoff, says aircraft mechanic who was onboard
Two airplane mechanics were aboard the American Airlines flight that went back to Las Vegas on Wednesday due to an engine issue.

An American Airlines flight departing from Los Angeles came across a frightening engine malfunction Wednesday early morning, however 2 aircraft mechanics onboard say the emergency situation landing was all of a sudden calm and controlled.
The airplane, Flight AA 1665, from Las Vegas to Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced a sudden surge of stimulates and smoke quickly after departure.
" We removed, and as soon as the pilots put the prepare, it resembled pop, pop, pop over and over," Paige Mitchell, a plane mechanic in Las Vegas, informed Fox 5. "You could sort of see like orange and yellow, like radiant, like every time you hear the pop."
Michael Lockett, a fellow guest and Air Force veteran with decades of experience working on military aircraft, said the noise was instantly recognizable and worrying.
" With my background, as quickly as it took place, I understood sort of what it was due to the fact that I've seen it on Air Force aircraft in the past," Lockett told the outlet.
Lockett stayed outwardly calm but admitted to mentally bracing for the worst.
" I already understood it was an engine failure," he said. "I didn't state anything out loud due to the fact that I didn't desire to, you understand, get people riled up, so the most I did was simply hope until we got back on the ground."
Mitchell said her likewise had her bracing for a rough landing, but she was impressed by how smoothly the pilots brought the aircraft down, with emergency situation teams satisfying guests the ground in Vegas.
" I resembled 'oh, this is going to be rough', but no, they actually put us down actually well, and as quickly as we struck the ground, they stopped, and there was fire trucks and authorities waiting for us," she stated, adding that the landing was" among the best landings I've ever experienced."
Both AA and the FAA told The Independent that Wednesday's emergency return was due to a "mechanical problem."
" The aircraft taxied cab to the gate under its own power, and customers deplaned typically. We appreciate the professionalism of our team and thank our team who are working to get our customers to their locations as quickly as possible," an AA representative said.
